- Families in Miami, New York and Atlanta sending clothes, school supplies and household goods home, without waiting weeks for a barrel.
- Jamaicans moving back after years abroad who need the essentials there before the container lands.
- Anyone whose mover said the job was too small: a few boxes of books, kitchenware or keepsakes.
What's different about shipping to Jamaica
- The USD 100 test uses the value of the goods only. Shipping and insurance don't count toward it. Go one dollar over and duty, 15% GCT and small fees apply to the whole value, shipping included.
- The receiver needs a TRN. Jamaica Customs asks for the receiver's Taxpayer Registration Number and photo ID. It's free from Tax Administration Jamaica. Get it before the box ships; we ask for it at booking.
- Leave out meat, cheese and honey. Canned corned beef needs a veterinary permit. Honey is banned outright. Sealed snacks, baked goods and canned fish are fine.
- Coming home for good? Jamaicans 18 or over who lived abroad at least 3 consecutive years can bring household effects in duty free, once. Apply to the Returning Residents Unit before you ship, and time the boxes to land within 6 months of you.
Boxes, barrels or checked bags?
Barrels cost less per pound, but they travel by sea for weeks. At the port you clear them in person and unpack them for inspection. Express boxes arrive in days, clear through the courier, and are tracked door to door. Many families do both: the barrel for bulk, a few boxes for what can't wait.
Timing
December is the busiest month on this lane; book by early December for Christmas delivery. Hurricane season (June to November) can delay flights. Kingston, Montego Bay, Spanish Town, Portmore and Mandeville get the fastest service; rural parishes can add 1 to 3 days.
Questions about this lane
Can I send school supplies and uniforms from the US to Jamaica duty free?
Yes, if the box's contents are worth USD 100 or less. Above that, duty and GCT apply to the full value.
Is it cheaper to send a barrel or boxes to Jamaica?
A barrel is cheaper per pound for heavy, non-urgent goods. Boxes are faster, door to door and cleared for you, which is why people use them for anything needed this month.
Can my relative in Jamaica receive the box without a TRN?
Expect delays. Customs asks for the receiver's TRN and photo ID to clear personal goods.
